Liberty, Responsibility, and the New Deal

This will be a four-session application based colloquium style discussion that will rely heavily on participant preparation and involvement. Registrations must be approved by Institute staff.

The purpose of this conference on the debate between Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Herbert Hoover over the scope of federal power is to better understand the events, arguments, and policies that unfolded during the New Deal. Participants will consider the cleavage between Roosevelt’s Progressivism and the former understanding of federal government power that the Progressives attempted to, and, in many respects, succeeded in dislodging.

Gordon Lloyd’s edited volume The Two Faces of Liberalism will serve as the primary text for this conference.
