Presidents and The Constitution: Presidential Powers

This one-day professional development workshop is best suited for 8-12th grade social studies teachers.

Description

Each U.S. Presidency is unique, and yet the United States has seen stable cycles of Presidential administrations since its birth.  BRI traces the threads that bind the few …the relatively small number of Americans that have held the office of Chief Executive.  This one day BRI Teacher Seminar will trace developments within the Executive Branch, with a special focus on the experiences that presidents have faced throughout the life cycles of administrations, such as: Political Parties; the election of Presidents and Electors; The President as Enforcer of Law, Federal Power and the Bully Pulpit; the President as Chief Diplomat; Impeachment; and the Transfer of Power to a new President, continuing this important and unbroken role in American Government.

The program will combine BRI curricular activities, pedagogy workshops, and presentations from an expert in Presidential History.  The 6 hour professional development experience will touch upon the aspects of the office, as well as at turning points in the lives of those who have served as Chief Executive within the past 230 years, with activities that look at the administrations of presidents such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Johnson, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, and more!

At this time, the Bill of Rights Institute is planning to host in-person programming in the fall of 2020 but we plan to closely monitor the public health conditions and state and local guidelines related to the COVID-19 pandemic. We will do our part to keep our participants and communities safe and if travel or gathering is ill-advised at the time of the program, we will explore alternative programming, and host online opportunities for professional development.

Details will be provided to participants if these changes become necessary.
